RV BATTERIES

This includes lots of electrical appliances and devices. Watts, or overall power, is a product of current, or amps, and voltage. If you want to know how many different electrical devices you can have on at one time in your RV or in your home, for that matter , this formula will tell you. As long as you stay under the amount of available wattage, your circuits will run smoothly. The volt system is powered by an RV electrical hookup plug or a generator, and it powers daily use items like kitchen appliances, your TV, and other electrical appliances. This can be achieved with a single 12 volt battery or several 12 volt batteries wired together in a parallel circuit. However, using two 6 volt batteries wired together in a series circuit to essentially create a 12 volt battery is typically better than using a single 12 volt battery. The trade-off for using two 6 volt batteries is that two batteries take up more space than one. However, that trade-off may be worth it if your camping needs require that extended battery life.

Share Tweet Many RV owners hate the constant battle to power their desired electrical appliances on 30 amp service. Is it possible to convert your RV from 30 amp service to 50 amp service? Surprisingly, you can convert a 30 amp RV for use with a 50 amp pedestal. YouTube This video answered a lot of commonly asked questions about RV shore power. I had no idea it could take up to 8 hours to rewire an RV for 50 amp service.

The option to run a amp recreational vehicle, or RV, from a 50 amp outlet is useful to many RVers. To avoid catastrophic damage to appliances, equipment and wiring circuits, and a real danger of fire, the amperage must be stepped down to 30 amps.

The real first question you need to answer is whether your pop up is wired for 20 amps. Go find the electrical cord that is attached to your trailer’s breaker panel where it exits the body of the trailer. Take a close look at the male end of that cord. If it looks like a conventional household plug 2 vertical prongs and a ground spike , then your trailer is equipped for a 15 amp service.

If it has one vertical prong, a horizontal prong and a ground spike, then it’s a 20 amp fitting. If it has 2 prongs set a 45 degree angle with a ground spike underneath, then it’s a 30 amp fitting. Once you figured out what your trailer is equipped for, you can move on the step of obtaining the right adapters. If your trailer is equipped with a 30 amp plug, you won’t need an adapter, but you may need an extension cord to reach the power connection at your camp.

Avoid the temptation to use a household cord and a couple of adapters. Overloading a 15 amp cord can be dangerous and result in fires.

Awning On most newer RVs, the manufacturer includes a roll-out awning. The awning can be either manually operated or it can be operated electrically. Another type of awning used by RVers is a portable pop-up canopy or tent that provides a temporary solution to people who want to be outdoors and enjoy shade.

The frame usually incorporates an accordion style truss which folds up compactly.

If you have room for 2 or 4 batteries, you might want to consider using 6v golf cart batteries. They are true deep cycle batteries and will last a lot longer than most common 12v batteries in your RV. Golf cart batteries have a higher capacity than group 24 and 27 batteries If you decide to change over to the 6v golf cart batteries, you must make an important wiring change. Most rigs that have 2 or more 12v batteries have them wired in parallel.

When going to the 6v batteries, you must wire pairs of them in series to produce the needed 12 volts. This is actually simpler than it sounds When installing new batteries, mark the cables so you do not forget which one is positive and negative. If you are changing over from a set of 12v batteries to a pair or set of 6v batteries, some changes in cabling will be required see above image.

If you are adding more than 2 batteries, see the image below for a wiring example. If you have any doubts about doing this, seek professional help.

How to Wire 50 Amp Service for an RV by John Cagney Nash Although a 50 amp service for a recreational vehicle, or RV, is connected to four wires and uses a four-prong plug, it is still a three pole service with only hot, neutral and ground connections. It is different from a conventional volt service in that there are two volt hot feeds, or legs, each at 50 amps.

A 50 amp service is not a 30 amp service and a 20 amp service joined together.

But, it’s different when owners of amp rigs hook up to amp outlets, then run a whole bevy of appliances, including power-hungry equipment such as heaters and air conditioners. That sets up a situation where the breaker on a amp outlet may not trip until the load exceeds 4, watts.

My RV has Amp connections. Is there a way to hook up to use Amp service? What do I need to do and will everything work properly? The short answer is yes, but first you need to have an adapter so you can physically plug in to the Amp outlet. Once you have the adapter, you should be able to use all your appliances — just not at the same time. You will have to manage your power usage, and be particularly aware at appliance start-up, when things like the microwave and air conditioner tend to draw more power than they do once they are up and running.

For instance, on Amps, we may run our refrigerator and air conditioner at the same time but will refrain from using the microwave until the air conditioner is off.

What Is a Full Hookup at an RV Park?

I have a 5th wheel. It has two batteries. My problem is they keep going dead. I can hook up to shore power for hours and once I disconnect, they will only hold charge for a short time they are practically brand new, I replaced the old ones because I thought they were bad, now not so sure. I run the generator and they die.

50amp Vs 30amp

Hooking up a amp vehicle to a amp power pedestal whenever possible will help protect the long-term dependability of appliances in your rig, Finch says. The breakers for the electrical systems in most campgrounds are designed with a tolerance of percent, plus or minus. If breakers tripped at exactly 30 amps, they would cost much more — perhaps 10 times as much — as breakers normally used.

A amp outlet supplies 3, watts 30 amps multiplied by volts. Therefore, the breaker on that outlet could meet code and still trip anywhere between a total load of 2, watts 80 percent of 3, watts and 4, watts percent of 3, watts. That sets up a situation where the breaker on a amp outlet may not trip until the load exceeds 4, watts.

We have often talked about putting in a 30 amp breaker and RV style outlet for the camper at the house. Add to that any other electrical devices in your camper and you quickly see why a 30 amp electric supply is needed. Most standard household plugs only supply 15 amps, so using a common adaptor to allow the 30 amp RV plug to be inserted into a standard household 15 amp outlet may be quickly overloaded.

While this adaptor may be safe to use in limited situations when you closely monitor what devices are being powered, I think the installation of a 30 amp RV style outlet. It was only when our Air Conditioning went out at the house that we “needed” the camper to use as an “air conditioned lifeboat”!! Install a 20 amp plug close to where you park the camper, and get a real 20 amp extension cord the shorter the better.

Install a 30 amp RV plug plug close to where you park the camper, and into this you can plug the 30 amp RV cord. We chose to do 2. After a trip to Home Depot for the new breaker, box, cover plate and wire and a trip to a local RV dealer the 30a plug, neither Home Depot or a local electrical supply house carried them I had all the parts. If you are not comfortable working with electric, hire someone to do this!!!!!!! Open the breaker panel and install 30 amp breaker. This will be wired to the 30a, v RV style plug.

The advanced charge controller has a nifty technology called Maximum Power Point Tracking, which does away with all the estimates and math about having optimal panel angles and trying to guess where the maximum rays are coming from. Having this kind of technology lets users just lay out the panels wherever it is convenient, and let MPPT do the rest.

Electric 50 to 30 AMP

And I don’t know much about electrical issues. But I try to learn from others and then put that information in terms everyone can understand. So the discussions below are my attempt to simplify what can be a very complicated system to comprehend. Then it dawned on me that I would want it to be really, really basic.

The AC Distribution Panel is rated for VAC @ 30 Amps with up to 7 branch circuits. The DC section has 12 branch fuse holders, two wired to accommodate 30 Amp fuses, ten more with a maximum rating up to 20 Amps each.

Just what it will take depends to a great extent upon just how your present RV is wired. If you don’t already have things separated out into separate circuits, then you would need a complete rewire in order to gain much from the added power, other than perhaps the ability to use two air conditioners at one time. So that makes four 15A circuit breakers. There are also two 20A breakers, each one supplying one air conditioner. Many 30A RVs have only one circuit to supply all outlets, one to supply the microwave and other appliances and one, or two for the air conditioners if you have two.

In order to get full benefit from the 50A supply you would need to separate the outlets into more than one circuit or the single 15A circuit breaker would prevent any benefit from the added power supply. You can’t just install a larger circuit breaker with the same configuration because the wire size is not large enough to send more than the rated 15A through it without danger of a fire.
