Cubbington history[ edit ] There are two possible origins for the name of Cubbington based on its earlier names. The first is Cobynton, meaning “town of the descendants of Coba”. The second is from the name used for a period of time after the Domesday Book of , Cumbynton. Cumbe was a medieval word signifying that a settlement was in a low or deep hollow. The fact that the village lies in a shallow valley supports the second theory. Mary’s parish church In early November a group of men, including Robert Catesby , who were involved in the gunpowder plot , passed through the village. They were fleeing from London after the arrest of Guy Fawkes. The first mention of the windmill was in in a dispute between the Prior of Kenilworth and the Abbot of Stoneleigh.

A predominantly upper-middle class residential suburb, Ponsonby today is also known in Auckland for its dining and shopping establishments — many restaurants, cafes, art galleries, up-market shops and nightclubs are located along Ponsonby Road. The area was originally a working class to middle class area. The suburb has undergone extensive gentrification over the last two decades, arguably returning it to its largely middle class origins.

This short guide will show you our favourite places that we visited month by month throughout , although there are many many more I wish we could add in as well: January Starting off our January adventures was the beautiful English city of Coventry , located in the West Midlands. We visited the bombed out Cathedral from , and climbed up to the top of the tower to get a great view out across the city.
Later that same month we headed back to the Midlands, but this time to the East, where we visited 1st the city of Leicester , and then moved on to the town of Oakham. February In February we spent a lot of time on and around the River Mersey, which separates the historic counties of Lancashire and Cheshire. Starting in New Brighton on the Cheshire side, we explored the old Lighthouse, Fort and promenade, before turning to get a beautiful view back up the Mersey, with the city of Liverpool visible in the far bank, and the town of Wallasey further down the promenade.
March In March, we arrived in Staffordshire for a day out, where we visited the city of Stoke-on-Trent , formed out of 6 towns who merged to create one city. Stoke has many varied attractions, and leaving the train station we came face to face with Josiah Wedgwood, a famous pottery maker from the city, whose statue greeted us. In the city centre we found an Elephant Trail in the Potteries Shopping Centre, various Town Halls that the different towns were once run by, a beautiful public park and Stoke Minster on the far side of the train line, amongst other things.
From Stoke, we did a 6 mile walk to the town of Newcastle-under-Lyme which is contiguous with Stoke. Here we found the impressive Guildhall in the centre of the Market Place, which heralded the end of our walk, although of course we still had to walk back again to get our train home! April April heralded a return to the Mersey, but this time we went a little further, to spend the day at the National Waterways Museum in the town of Ellesmere Port. Here you could walk around a wide variety of different canal boats, tugs and other vessels, and explore the old warehouses which were in use when this was an actual port.

Was the LMS too big? Frederic Stansfield In his reply to my earlier letter about the size of the LMS September issue , Doug Landau November issue makes many interesting points describing the company’s engineering innovations. But two of Landau’s examples show how engineering developments within the LMS were subordinated to business issues. LMS management’s rejection of electrification proposals, because of insufficient return on capital, is unsurprising when neither the scheme nor the one linked London with a major city such as Birmingham.
Also, the belt repair system to which Landau refers represented the development in Britain of “scientific management” techniques. As he indicates, this system had the business aim of reducing repair times and costs. Letter writer would agree in general with Landau’s observation that the Southern Railway was the most forward looking of the ‘Big Four’.
However, in my previous letter I compared the LMS not with its British contemporaries but with other European railways, which received more government support. Britain’s railways, including the LMS, did receive very limited government finance in the s. Landau does not address the question ‘Was the LMS too big? The company’s business failure to follow-up engineering developments, such as electrification and main line diesel locomotives, would suggest the opposite.
The LMS was if anything too small to attract the money needed to implement its engineers’ technical innovations.
